                        CANCER AT THE NIH

A STAR NIH researcher (National Institutes of Health) faked 
              laboratory data, made up experimental results, and 
              published his lies.  Dr. Francis Collins, head of 
              the NIH genetics laboratory, announced the 
              discovery, but declined to name the scientist.  
              Reporters determined the man to be Amitav Hajra, a 
              doctoral candidate at the University of Michigan.  
              Three published studies on leukemia had to be
              retracted, and two others partially retracted, an 
              extremely rare occurrence.  The government paid 
              $60,000 for the faked research, and other projects 
              may have been started based on the results.  Mr. 
              Hajra was hand- picked by Dr. Collins.

ANALYSIS & COMMENTARY: What is not mentioned in the article is the 
perhaps hundreds of other research projects around the world that 
may have been started -- and funded -- based on the faked results 
reported by this NIH scientist.

IN this case the lies were evidently for personal gain, but 
political gain is becoming even more common.  This is indicated by 
what passes for firearms "research" by those seeking to ban 
firearms -- yet refuse to release their studies or methodologies.

WE need only consider the advances in medicine over the past fifty 
years to understand that all of us have a compelling interest in 
maintaining the integrity of scientific research.  This means 
defending the scientific process from those who would abuse it for 
their own ends.
